First flood disaster hits two World Vision programs
20 August 2007

WVCambodia staff in Preah Vihhear province report two Area Development Programs (ADPs) have been covered by 3 meters of water followed by non-stop raining since August 06th. This marks the first flood to hit the area.

“On 10th August at 04 PM water flowed from Dong Rek Mountain over two districts of WVC ADPs in Tbeng Meanchey and Kulen. All of our ADP staff were immediately sent to rescue the villagers. We also sent out boats to evacuate those struggling on top of their homes, trees and under water,” said Malen Yos, a Kulen ADP Manager.

A report released by the local authority in Preah Vihhear on 09th August indicated 7 districts were flooded. Over 2,250 houses, 60 cows, 500 chickens and ducks, 63 tons of rice stock, 50 hectars of farm land, 8,845 meters of rural road and 5 bridges have been destroyed. Current estimates will surpass initial damage expectation if the flood level does not drop within a few days.

World Vision activated the Emergency Response Team to the affected areas on 10th August. Semi-assessment indicated over 45.10 hectars of rice fields and 38 houses in Tbeng Meanchey ADP were completely destroyed by flood water. Over 21 families have been safely evacuated and 13 families still missing.

The team provided emergency supplies such as tents, noodles, medicine and buckets to the victims within the affected areas. The team will expand to affected areas to assess further needs and respond accordingly.

“We will need a lot of time on restoration. Many people have lost their houses, properties and clothing. Without clean water, people especially children will be affected by diseases. So, the ADP staff will work in collaboration with the ERDM team and local government to respond to the issue,” says Malen Yos.
