World Vision provides healing and protection for orphans 25 August 2006
On 25 August, World Vision Community Care and Support for Orphans and Vulnerable Children project (OVC) organised a trip for 434 orphans whose parents died of HIV and AIDS.
The trip to Phnom Penh Water Park was part of the project’s children club activities to strengthen individual spirit and reduce depression as a result of abandonment. The trip offers children a psychological relief from suffering.
“This was the first time in my life to experience a trip like this. I am happy to visit the place, and took part in the fun,” said Soknay, an OVC from Boribour district, Kompong Chnnang province.
The current 20 children’s clubs are open once a month within the project’s targeted areas in Samrong Tong Phnom Srouch, Boribour and Tralach districts of Kompong Speu and Kompong Chnang province. Other activities include promoting children’s awareness on children’s rights, hygiene, HIV and AIDS, domestic violence, and exploitation and abuse from sexual predators.
“Without protection from parents or caregivers, orphans and vulnerable children are the most vulnerable to both physical and mental abuse. We want to do our best to protect these children from harm,” said Chhounleng Seng, Project Manager.
The project has created 11 Community Care Coalitions (CCC) to protect children from further exploitation and to ensure orphans and vulnerable children have access to public education, health care and vocational training.
Hem Sarun, a CCC member in Boribour district, Kompong Chnang province stated “since World Vision started in the area, sexual abuse cases have been reduced. Children have become more educated on prevention and detection of sexual offenders. Moreover, CCC and World Vision’s staff continuously support and visit the children to follow up on their progress.”
