Food Security Leads to a Fresh Opportunity 15 September 2006
The living development group was established in 2006 and subsequently received financial and technical support from the Food and Water Security Program of World Vision Cambodia.
A meeting was conducted in September 2006 at Chreab Kraham Primary School, Sre Chi Pov Village, Meanchey Commune, Somlot District, Battambang Province, participated by some 100 poor families, Rural Development Officials, Villages Development Committee, village leaders, Commune councilors, deputy district governor and Samlot ADP ‘s staff.
The purpose of the meeting is to find ways to reduce the poverty and ensure food security within the family and the community.
Mr. Teng Pich, chief of the living development group, said that the group aims to mobilize citizens to participate in the agricultural development group.
Mr. Sim Kharn, a model farmer from Meanchey commune stated that he was a poor farmer before he became a member of the living development group. After becoming a member, he was very happy because Food and Water Security Program provided him, as well as other farmer families in the community with transplant technical skill and how to raise chickens through training program.
Mrs. Nhem Sarim, Commune council chief, expressed her happiness that the farmers in her community have been helped by World Vision Cambodia. With such assistance, farmers now know better how to grow their plants properly thereby reducing the need to buy agricultural product from neighboring countries.
The strategic directions of World Vision Cambodia include food security, education, health and nutrition, peace and justice and HIV/AIDS,” said Mrs. Him Pisey, Samlot Area Development Program Manager and added that community empowerment is very important for World Vision Cambodia. “We want to see the community get better developed and can implement whatever they have learnt from World Vision‘s staff. The living development group is initiated by the community members themselves with assistance from World Vision Cambodia , she added.
Mr. Meas Toun, deputy district governor, stated that with the support of Food and Water Security of World Vision Cambodia, Mean Chey Commune has been rapidly developing. He also added that in Mean Chey, citizens use no chemical fertilizer when they grow fruits and vegetables so the products are very good quality. Because of World Vision’s support to the community people can continue their own development after World Vision Cambodia phases out of their communities.
