National Mourning Day

The Cambodian government defined 25th of November is a mourning day of 347 dead in the incident of bridge stampede at Koh Pich Island, the night of 22nd, which was a final day of the Water Festival. There were 395 injured getting treatments in hospitals.
World Vision Cambodia (WVC) organized the National Mourning Day at National Office in Phnom Penh on 25th November with around 200 staff from both World Vision and Vision Fund Cambodia. All of them expressed condolence to families who died in the incident with sadly faces.
World Vision Cambodia provided 770 packages of food and 39 cartons of water for injured people getting medical treatment in Calmette, Preah Kosomak and Cambodia-Russia friendship Hospital, which cost about 3,427,500 riels (857USD) and 415 USD. WVC provided 278 liters of formalin for corpses that haven’t been identified by their families and 870 ampoules of painkillers to Preah Kosomak hospital. Asides, World Vision Cambodia helped to seek for the families of seven corpses those were still in the hospital.
Ms. Esther Halim, country director of World Vision Cambodia said, “Our broken heart in the incident, we would like to share condolence with the families of the dead and share difficulties with families who are taking care of the victims in the hospitals. We received many condolence messages from partnerships of World Vision Cambodia. Besides, they contributed to pray for all victims’ families. I called for all of you do not spread the rumor in which leading people scared before the government confirms about the investigation. Please all level of leaders encourages all staffs to learn about security because it is very important for protecting ourselves and others.”
“I would like to thank all staff especially Humanitarian and Emergency Affaires program that cooperated with the government in assisting the victims,” she added.
Dinah Dimalanta, Ministry of Quality Director said, “We thank God that provides everything to enable us to respond the needs of victims on time.”
In the morning of 23rd November 2010, we were the first NGO that deployed staff in five hospitals to work together with Cambodia Red Cross in assisting the victims immediately.
