Strong Wind Injured 14 Destroyed 22 Houses 04 June 2010
On June 2nd, 2010 at 3pm a strong wind hit Chey Thom commune in Khsach Kandal district completely destroyed 22 houses and injured 14 people most of them are children. The wind hit four villages – Chey Lus, Chey Thom, Chey Toch and Ta Khort. Among the 22 houses, nine houses are World Vision’s former registered children. WVC’s Khsach Kandal Area Development Program was phased out from this Chey Thom commune since last year.
Among the 14 injured, six people were seriously injured and sent to Phnom Penh hospital for treatment. Mrs. Yan Ven the owner of a big new house was sobbing in front of her damaged house as her husband broke his leg and the children were seriously injured. They were admitted to Phnom Penh hospital. She borrowed a lot of money from other people and VisionFund Cambodia to build such a big house, but now it is destroyed.
Responding to the disaster, a top leader from the ruling party came to offer some money and two boxes of instant noodles each family to temporarily relieve their vulnerabilities. It is still early to estimate the total cost of the damage. World Vision Cambodia is assessing the whole situation in order to respond appropriately.
