Training of Youth Group Leader: Reflection on Training Activities in Their Community
23 September 2008

September 9th 2008, At the Nokor Phnom Hotel of Siem Reap Province. World Vision’s Children at High at Risk Prevention Project (CHRPP), open a forum for young people to reflect on the training activities they’ve conducted in their community up to date. Funds to support the project come from New Zealand. The forum lasted from Tuesday September 9th to September 11th. The project also receives funds from other countries. The children come from Battambang, Kampong Chhnang, Kampong Thom, and Kampong Speu provinces.

All the participants are below age 19 and come from peer educators, club leaders and also leading young people in the community. There are a total of 90 people from 4 District from the four provinces. His Excellency Mao Vuthy, Deputy Governor of Siem Reap as the advisor to PM Hun Sen, said “All of your participation today is to develop our society and our country. You should all take the opportunity to learn from each other. Children and youth are the bamboo shoot and the columns of our society in the near future. Therefore you should have vision for yourselves and your society and country. In order to develop this vision, you all should work hard and study hard. Learn what parents and teachers have to teach you. Pay respect to the culture and tradition of Cambodia in order to be good citizens. Additionally, all of you should strive to help each other work together in order to bring about positive changes in our society.”

Mr. Ket Chanto, Education Program Manager said, “This is a very good occasion that all of you from different provinces come together to meet and share with each other about your work. Because you are the leaders among your age group and as the peer education, you can work towards building a vision for your community. For example, what do you want to see for your community in the next five to ten years? Or What do you want for yourself in the next five to ten years? Do you want to go to University or want the community to have good access to water infrastructures or good roads in order to facilitate travel? Today we have about 110 clubs throughout the country that are in locations where WVC work. All the clubs have over 1,760 club leaders, members are 12,100 under the CHRPP. Additionally, we have created 234 members who belong to peer educator. This is the fifth times that WVC’s CHHRP have put together this event. In order to provide training for group leaders, reflection, and encourage you to share with your family, friends and members of society in order to build sustainability for the family, society and community as a whole.

16 year-old Reung Sreytouch from Kampong Speu is currently one of the inspiring peer educators who is driving changes in her community.

“Before they said that children have not value, that we can not teach adults anything. But this belief do not make us happy, we do not believe it. No matter how old the person is, we all have the same rights in school, in communities and in society as a whole. This is the time that young people can share their ideas and have plans to develop themselves. Particularly, we can ask to participate in giving our thoughts on education and other issues that affect our communities. But if we could not join in the education and participation then we would easily fall prey to the vices of society such as drugs, trafficked and abuses such as rape.

On the third day of the workshop, the children created their to-do plan, vision for themselves and community, and made a commitment to spread the knowledge that they’ve acquired to their communities.

The three day workshop was funded by the government of New Zealand (NZAID), and other donors funded through WVC’s Area Development Programs in five provinces.
