Cambodian Children Take Lead to Stop Violence 01 November 2006
Over 175 children, representing over 12,000 children who participate in the 102 Children’s Clubs facilitated by World Vision throughout Cambodia, gathered in the port city of Kompong Som last week for World Vision’s Children’s Club Leadership Workshop. The children united to share personal achievements and review the challenges they face in their respective communities.
Attendees, aged 12-18 years old, hold leadership positions in World Vision’s children’s clubs. As leaders, these children are active members of their communities, encouraging and training their peers to respond to and resolve various issues affecting local villages.
The workshop marks the third annual event organized by WVC with financial support from USAID. A key distinction between this year’s event from prior years is the emphasis on “understanding the causes and effects of violence and to promote peace in the community.”
“Violence happens in most communities, some violence amongst youths are caused by children fighting because they don’t understand peaceful resolutions to problems,” said Mr. Nhim Sambath, Children at High Risk Prevention project manager of Education program. “We hope from this 3-day workshop, children will share their newly-found knowledge, especially with their peers in the community, so that violence can be minimized,” continued Sambath.
Mr. Ket Chanto, the Education Program Coordinator, in his opening speech said “Caring of children is the first priority for World Vision in order to fulfill our vision to help every child reach his fullest life. All of you who participated in this workshop play an important role to influence children in your community to become brave by speaking out and quit practicing inappropriate habits to return to school and become the bamboo shoot of the country’s future.”
16 year-old Kim Ly from Kompong Chhnang province is one of the inspiring child leaders driving changes in his community.
“The children’s club is very important to me and the whole community as it provides me with knowledge and ability to train other children in my village. It helps the people in my community to understand and become aware of the issues related to child trafficking and violence. Moreover, children’s club helps to push for improvement in education.”
Throughout the workshop, children made recommendations about the issues they face and the support they need from World Vision and government to prevent domestic violence and encourage peace initiatives in their villages.
On the final evening, the children participated in role-plays focused on the causes of violence.
Through the words of one child attendee, Vin Navy, from Kompong Thom province said, “I want to see families, villages and the country’s leaders provide a special caring and protecting Cambodian children from all types of abuses and give them a chance to study further so that they can have a good job in the future.”
World Vision's Children's Clubs in Cambodia are supported by WV Australia, WV New Zealand, WV Japan, WV UK and WV US (USAID).
